Benefit calculations

SIRVA's Global Cost Estimator offers standard calculations for a variety of global relocation benefits. These calculations provide an estimate for pre-departure, relocation and repatriation costs associated with an employee's relocation for short term, long term or permanent assignments.

Pre-Departure Cost Calculations

Visa & Immigration
The cost estimator can calculate two different visa and immigration costs, one for the employee and another for all dependent costs. These costs can be applied for permanent, long and short term assignments. There is no associated costs for visa and immigration when home to host city and country locations are both contained within the European Union.

The employee costs are based solely on values found in a rate table based on the host country. The rate covers both the management fee and other country fees for the assignment immigration assistance costs in year one, extension/renewal costs for ongoing years and de-registration/departure costs in the final year of the assignment. The dependent costs cover just the management fee. That fee is multiplied by the total number of family members being relocated to calculate the total dependent cost of the benefit.

Destination Services
The destination services calculation is applied to the costs for the first year of the assignment. The cost is based on values found in a rate table based on the host country. For both long term and permanent assignment types, the standard calculation covers five days of bundled services. These bundled services can include:

  • area orientation
  • home search
  • settling-in package
  • school search

For short term assignment types, the standard calculation covers one day of housing assistance and one day of settling in services. If a benefit cap is configured for the benefit within the chosen policy and assignment type, and if the destination services calculation exceeds the benefit cap, then the benefit cap amount is applied as the amount included in the cost estimate.

Cross Cultural Training
The cost estimator can calculate two different cross cultural training costs, one for the employee and another for all dependent costs. These cross cultural training calculations are applied to the costs for the first year of the assignment. The cost is based on values found in a rate table based on the host country. For the standard calculation of assignee training, the rates cover a two-day program delivered directly to the employee. The standard calculation for dependents includes a:

  • two-day small group training for spouse/partner
  • one-day youth program for each relocating child

If a benefit cap is configured for the benefit within the chosen policy and assignment type, and if the cross cultural training calculation exceeds the benefit cap, then the benefit cap amount is applied as the amount included in the cost estimate.

Relocation Cost Calculations

Relocation Shipment of Personal Items - Air
The relocation shipment of personal items - air calculation is applied to the costs for the first year of the assignment. It is available for permanent, short and long term assignment types. The cost is based on values found in a rate table based on the home to host city and country locations. If only one person is relocating, then the calculation is based on the use of a small air container. If the number of people in the family relocating is two, then the calculation is based on the use of a large air container. If the number of people in the family relocating is more than two, then the calculation is based on the use of both a small and a large air container.

Relocation Shipment of Household Goods - Surface
The relocation shipment of household goods - surface calculation is applied to the costs for the first year of the assignment. It is only available for long term and permanent assignment types. The cost is based on values found in a rate table based on the home to host city and country locations. If the number of people in the family relocating is two or less, then the calculation is based on the use of a small, 1x20 sea container. If the number of people in the family relocating is three or more, then the calculation is based on the use of a large, 1x40 sea container.

Relocation Storage in Transit - Host
The relocation storage in transit - host calculation is applied to the costs for the first year of the assignment. The standard calculation allows for one month of storage. It is available for permanent or long term assignment types. The cost is based on values found in a rate table based on the host city and country location. If the number of people in the family relocating is two or less, then the calculation is based on the use of a 6500 pound, twenty foot container. If the number of people in the family relocating is more than two, then the calculation is based on the use of a 13,000 pound, forty foot container.

Repatriation Cost Calculations

Shipment of Personal Items - Air at Repatriation
The shipment of personal items - air at repatriation calculation is applied to the costs for the last year of the assignment. It is available for both short and long term assignment types.

Shipment of Household Goods - Surface at Repatriation
The shipment of household goods - surface at repatriation calculation is applied to the costs for the last year of the assignment. It is only available for long term assignment types.

Storage in Transit - Home at Repatriation
The storage in transit - home at repatriation is applied to the costs for the last year of the assignment. The standard calculation allows for one month of storage. It is available for long term assignment types. The cost is based on values found in a rate table based on the home city and country location. If the number of people in the family relocating is two or less, then the calculation is based on the use of a 6500 pound, twenty foot container.
